At a gas distribution pipeline installation site, the crew used a 2,000 W fusion heater and a 2,000 W hydraulic power unit to carry out PE pipe jointing.
The SOFIMO PS-5800T was positioned alongside the fusion equipment, supplying power close to the work area. With a combined rated load of 4,000 W, the setup demonstrates a practical application of battery power for utility construction.
PE pipe butt fusion involves several coordinated stages, including pipe preparation, heating, jointing, and cooling under pressure. The heater brings the pipe ends to the required fusion condition, while the hydraulic unit moves the carriage and applies the force required by the jointing procedure.
The power supply therefore needs to accommodate both heating and hydraulic operation.
SOFIMO Industrial Portable Power Station PS-5800T delivers 5,000 W of rated AC output at 220 V. The two rated loads total 4,000 W, equivalent to 80% of its rated output.
The unit also has a specified 15,000 W peak output for two seconds. Motor starting requirements must be assessed separately, particularly if the hydraulic unit starts while the heater is drawing power.
Utility crews work where the pipeline route takes them. A convenient electrical connection is not always available at the jointing location, and routing a long supply cable can complicate access and equipment placement.
On this project, SOFIMO Industrial Portable Power Station PS-5800T and fusion equipment were grouped within the work zone. The integrated battery supplied power without a continuous mains connection, reducing dependence on a distant distribution point.
A wheeled chassis and pull handle allow the power station to be repositioned where ground conditions permit. Crews can arrange the power source around the pipe, fusion machine, and available working space.
SOFIMO PS-5800T Industrial Portable Power Station features a 5.376 kWh LiFePO₄ battery.
PE pipe fusion welding involves heating, jointing, and cooling under pressure. Actual energy consumption depends on the heating element's temperature-controlled cycling and the operating time of the hydraulic unit.
Although the two devices have a combined rated power of 4,000 W, they do not operate continuously at full power throughout the entire welding cycle.
Gas distribution work often takes place near roads, buildings, and public activity. The choice of temporary power affects both the crew and the surrounding area.
With sufficient charge and a compatible load, SOFIMO Industrial Portable Power Station PS-5800T can power the equipment without a fuel-powered generator running beside the work area. This eliminates engine exhaust and generator engine noise from the power source, along with on-site refueling during battery operation.
For utility contractors, it provides an alternative way to supply temporary power where the working environment matters.
The equipment package also included the AK-170T 48 V DC welding unit, providing an option for suitable metal welding tasks.
PE pipe fusion uses the PS-5800T’s AC supply and is performed by the dedicated fusion equipment. The AK-170T serves a separate role, extending the package’s usefulness when a project also calls for metal welding. Combined operation must remain within the system’s specified load limits.
This application shows how SOFIMO brings battery power to the jointing location and supports the equipment utility crews already use.
